New painted numerals for ELR February Gala

The loco has undergone a repaint this winter, in addition to the heavy workload of annual maintenance. Those who saw the loco at the ELR's Winter Gala will, no doubt, have spotted a slight miss match between the cab and the rest of the engine's Brunswick green paint - this is currently being rectified.

The decision was taken late last year to carry out a traditional brush type repaint and, subject to authorisation by the owning company, a return to painted numerals on the cab side.  To paint a big Pacific in winter takes a lot of time and patience and I must thank the East Lancs Railway for their support and pit space during the works, and Ian Riley for use of gantries and scaffolds to allow a safe system of work.

Ian and Gilbert of Heritage Painting have applied approximately 55 litres of primer, undercoat, gloss and varnish over the last two months and the finish is outstanding.  As well as repainting all of the gloss green parts of the loco, the buffer planks, piano front, air brake cocks and running board tops have all received attention.

The Duke of Gloucester will be rolled out at the ELR's February Gala, the finished article, complete with painted numerals.
