On 22nd July 1990 71000 ran from Crewe to Llandudno Junction with a North Wales Coast Express On board that day were driver Bertie Edwards, fireman Keith Elliot and traction inspector Bill Andrews.
The train consisted of 14 coaches (489
tons) including the dynamometer car.
After the run Bill Andrews was to comment "71000 is
300% better now than in the 1950's. It was very hard graft when I worked on it
then. The new Kylchap exhaust has altered all that. 71000 burns as much coal as
before but now uses it to good effect and is certainly more
powerful"
